Internship
On a trip to South Korea to study the morphological diagnosis of cervical cancer
(Training Course for Clinical Experts)
Dr.Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program2021
KOFIH Global Training Program for Healthcare Workforce
Place of study: South Korea, Wonju
Organization Name: Wonju Severance Christian Hospital
Name of the training course: “Dr.Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program for clinical experts”
"Morphological and immunohistochemical diagnostics of the cervical canal"
Course duration: 05/30/2022 - 07/17/2022
Since cervical cancer ranks 2nd in terms of incidence of oncological diseases among women of the Republic of Uzbekistan aged 15 to 44 years, and every year, on average, 1,795 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the country, as a result of which 768 die from this disease . In Asia, about 3.4% of women in the general population, according to international experts, suffer from HPV-16/18 cervical infection at some point in their lives, and the cause of invasive cervical cancer in 68.9% is HPV 16, 18, 31, 33 types.
In Uzbekistan, women aged 15 and over make up 11.2 million of the total population. And these women are not immune to the risk of developing cervical cancer.
Today, liquid cytological studies are widely used in gynecology for the diagnosis of cervical cancer. Early detection of this disease saves the lives and health of thousands of women, so the possession of this diagnostic technique is of such great importance.
In 2022, 2 laboratory assistants of the Research Institute of Virology of the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Epidemiology, Microbiology, Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Akhmedova Sh.Kh. and Turabova N.R., under the KOFIH (Korea Foundation for International Healthcare-Korea Foundation for International Healthcare) project, they completed an internship at one of the largest and most prestigious higher educational institutions in South Korea, at Yonsei University –Severance Christian Hospital.
The knowledge and experience gained in the international internship of laboratory doctors Akhmedova Sh.Kh., and Turabova N.R. will provide an opportunity for early detection of cervical cancer, which will reduce the number of deaths and improve the quality of life of women.

Free cervical cancer screening now available in Samarkand
Free screening tests for cervical cancer were conducted in Tashkent city and Andijan region, and five family policlinics in Samarkand Region have launched free screening processes for cervical cancer as well.
The main cause of cervical cancer (98-99 per cent) is the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is considered the only cancer that can be avoided.
Cervical cancer is asymptomatic and can only be detected by perforation. If the disease is detected at an early stage, the necessary time for treatment will be sufficient. In turn, the morbidity and mortality rates are reduced.
The disease can only be beaten by regular check-ups, early diagnosis and treatment measures.
The Research Institute of Virology, together with the South Korean Cofix Foundation, has launched free screening processes in 5 central family policlinics in Tashkent and 2 in Andijan province.
Free cervical cancer screening processes have also started in 5 family polyclinics in Samarkand Region.

For information: more than 12,000 women have been screened in Tashkent city and Andizhan province so far. According to the results of the screening, the virus has been detected in 11 per cent of women. In Andijan province, precancerous lesions were detected in 6 per cent of women screened and cervical cancer in 3 per cent.
In Tashkent, 6 per cent of women were found to have precancerous lesions, but no cervical cancer was detected. The relevant doctors monitor changes detected during the screening process and the necessary recommendations are made.

Cervical cancer screenings are continuing
Oncological diseases are an urgent medical and social problem that seriously affects human health all over the world today.
According to the World Health Organization, the incidence of such diseases is increasing year by year.
For example, about 3.5 million cases of primary cancer are diagnosed in the European Union every year.

Stomach, lung and cervical cancer are in the next places.
Cervical cancer is the only cancer that is 100% preventable.
The main cause of the disease (98-99 percent) is the human papilloma virus (HPV).
Pre-cancerous conditions are observed before cancer. If the disease is detected early, the time required for treatment will be sufficient. As a result of early diagnosis and treatment of human papilloma virus, the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer decreases.

Check yourself for cervical cancer for free!
Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the world. Uzbekistan ranks fourth in the world in mortality among young women from this disease.
According to Globacan*, 1,863 women in Uzbekistan are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, and more than 42% of them die.
Cervical cancer is the second most dangerous disease after breast cancer among women of all ages. It is on the list of dangerous diseases that are fatal after diseases such as breast and stomach cancer. Cervical cancer is especially dangerous among women of childbearing age (15-44 years). In most cases, the disease has bad consequences because it is diagnosed late. One of the main causes of cervical cancer (98-99%) is the human papillomavirus (HPV). To protect our women as much as possible against cervical cancer, which has dangerous and tragic consequences, 90% of girls under 15 years old should be vaccinated against the HPV which causes the disease, and preventative examinations should be carried out for 70% of women aged 35-45 years. According to research scientists, if all preventive measures are followed, by 2050 the incidence of the disease will decrease by 40% and more than 5 million deaths will be prevented.
For this purpose screening processes are conducted in 7 central family policlinics in Tashkent city, 2 in Andijan province and 5 in Samarkand province in cooperation with the Research Institute of Virology and the South Korean Foundation KOFIH.

On February 14, 2023, an event dedicated to the signing of a cooperation agreement on the project "Improving the possibilities of detecting the human papilloma virus and diagnosing cervical cancer among women in the territories of the Republic (Tashkent city, Andijan and Samarkand regions)" was held at the RIEMYuPKIATM Virology Research Institute.
Mr. Kim Chang-Yop, President of KOFIH (Korea International Health Foundation) of South Korea visited the event.
KOFIH is a fund under the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Republic of Korea, and today this organization is implementing advanced projects for the development of the medical system in many countries of the world.
In recent years, the work carried out by this fund in Uzbekistan on health care and training of medical personnel is gaining importance in emergency medical care, protection of mothers and children's health, strengthening of reproductive health of the population in our country.
Every year in Uzbekistan, 1863 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and more than 42% of them die.
Cervical cancer is the second most dangerous disease after breast cancer among women of all ages. It is considered one of the dangerous diseases leading to death after diseases such as breast and stomach cancer. According to the research scientists, if all the preventive measures are followed, the disease will be reduced by 40% by the year 2050 and more than 5 million deaths will be prevented.
At the end of the event, Erkin Musabaev, Director of the Scientific Research Institute of Virology, and Mr. Kim Chang-yup, President of KOFIH Foundation (Korea International Health Foundation) of South Korea, spoke about "Human papillomavirus detection and cervical cancer among women in the regions of the Republic (Tashkent city, Andijan and Samarkand regions) "Improving the capabilities of the disease diagnosis" project contract was signed.

This memorandum was signed in December 2020 in order to continue the investment project cooperation agreement signed in December 2020 between the South Korean KOFIH Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Sanitary-Epidemiological Peace and Public Health Service and the Research Institute of Virology in 2023. For information, it can be said that the total value of the investment project cooperation agreement is 380 thousand US dollars.
Mr. Kim Chang Yop also got acquainted with PCR equipment and liquid cytology laboratory.
At the end of the event, media representatives received answers to all their questions.
GOAL: REDUCE THE NUMBER OF INFECTIONS WITH CANCER
