Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in Uzbekistan.

TASHKENT, July 22 - Sputnik. A conference is being held in Samarkand dedicated to the issues of diagnosis and treatment of human papillomavirus (HPV) and its spread in Uzbekistan.

Thus, the event is taking place on July 22-23, and is attended by representatives of the Ministry of Health, SES, doctors and scientists, KPFIH.

It is known that in the regions of Uzbekistan, they plan to examine 50 thousand women for the presence of human papillomavirus and cervical cancer (CC) over three years. At the moment, more than 12 thousand women have already undergone the examination.

In Uzbekistan, as in the rest of the world, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women of all ages. Breast cancer is the leading cancer. According to the oncological database Global Cancer Observatory, cervical cancer is diagnosed in 1,863 women in the republic every year, and more than 42% of them die. The cause of most deaths is late diagnosis. It is the human papillomavirus that causes cervical cancer; it is detected in 98-99% of cases.

During the conference, specialists noted that cervical cancer is the only type of cancer that can be completely prevented. It develops gradually. The development of the tumor is caused by precancerous diseases. There is enough time for diagnosis and treatment, experts emphasized.

Currently, within the framework of a pilot project of the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan, the Research Institute of Virology and KOFIH, 50 thousand women in Tashkent, Samarkand and Andijan regions will be examined for HPV, as well as diagnosed with cervical cancer.

To date, within the framework of the project, more than 12 thousand women have been examined in Tashkent and Andijan region. The virus was detected in 11% of them. In Andijan region, 6% of women who underwent repeated examination were diagnosed with precancerous diseases and 3% were diagnosed with cervical cancer.

It was also reported at the conference that in Samarkand, examination of women began in June of this year, so there is no specific data for this region yet. The project will last until 2024. Thanks to this program, the spread of HPV will be studied for the first time on a national scale and a system for early diagnosis of HPV and cervical cancer will be created, as well as standards and practical guidelines for detecting the virus, preventing and treating cancer will be developed.

We remind you: Uzbekistan actively cooperates with foreign partners in the field of healthcare, in particular, it is developing cooperation with Russia. Thus, the Center for Children's Oncohematology was opened in Tashkent. The Uzbek authorities also studied the experience of the Rogachev Medical Research Center. In addition, a branch of the Russian National Research Medical University named after Pirogova.
