Department of Research of Intestinal Viral Infections

Relevance of studying viral intestinal infections

Viral intestinal infections (VII) are one of the most pressing problems of infectious pathology, due to the high level of prevalence, a wide range of pathogens that can persist in the environment for a long time. In modern conditions, an important place in the etiology of AII is occupied by viruses: rotaviruses (Rotavirus), noroviruses (Norovirus), astroviruses (Astrovirus), adenoviruses (Adenovirus), sapoviruses (Sapovirus), toroviruses (Torovirus), as well as some enterotropic coronaviruses, picornaviruses (including echoviruses and coxsackieviruses), reoviruses and parvoviruses. Viruses cause acute gastroenteritis in people of all ages. In young children, the elderly and people with immunodeficiencies, viral intestinal infections often occur in a severe form. Etiotropic therapy for viral intestinal infections is very limited.

According to the World Health Organization, up to 1.7 billion cases of diarrheal diseases are registered annually in the world, with viruses making up a significant share in their structure, especially in children: rotavirus alone causes about 200 thousand deaths among children under 5 years of age every year, despite the existence of a vaccine. A significant contribution to the structure of infectious diseases, the risk of complications and deaths, especially in countries with limited resources, necessitate systemic epidemiological surveillance, in-depth study of the molecular and genetic characteristics of pathogens and the development of effective prevention and control strategies.

The main areas of activity of the Department of Viral Intestinal Infections:

Study of clinical and epidemiological features of diseases, improvement and implementation of new methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment, conducting scientific research and implementing their results in practical healthcare, preparing scientific publications and guidelines, participating in training and advanced training of specialists.
