Visit of representatives of the Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology to the Research Institute of Virology of the Republican Specialized Scientific-Practical Medical Center for Epidemiology, Microbiology, Infectious and Parasitic Diseases

Since 2013, the Federal Foreign Office has been helping partner countries minimize biological risks as part of the German Biosecurity Program.  The program is part of the federal government's preventive security policy.

 The program raises awareness and minimizes the risks associated with highly pathogenic agents, including their potential use for terrorist purposes.

 The Bundeswehr Institute for Microbiology has projects in West Africa, Tunisia, Georgia, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.

German-Uzbek cooperation was initiated in 2020 as part of the EU Centers of Excellence Initiative.

 Since 2023, the project continues under the German Biosafety Program.

On 03.05.2023 in the branch of Research Institute of Virology a meeting with a delegation from the Institute of Microbiology of the Bundeswehr was held. Within the framework of the conversation the parties discussed issues of introducing a mobile laboratory into the routine practice of the medical service. Issues of organizing field expeditions with the use of mobile laboratories.

Issues in the field of epidemiology, microbiology, infectious and parasitic diseases were discussed taking into account the interests of Research Institute of Virology of the Republican Specialized Scientific-Practical Medical Center for Epidemiology, Microbiology, Infectious and Parasitic Diseases.

The concept of training new laboratory specialists as trainers for mobile diagnostics in accordance with the "Train the Trainer" concept. Issues of program development, integration into the system of postgraduate education of specialists, implementation of acquired knowledge and skills in practical health care. Strengthening the application of international standards of biosafety and biosecurity in research and daily work of the Center's laboratories.

Scientific research issues were discussed. Given the fact that the Center is responsible for sequencing issues, it is extremely important to develop a joint plan for the development of sequencing of new and emerging infections. Also, the issues of training specialists in the sequencing of infections were discussed.

The parties discussed the topics of trainings for specialists within the framework of biosafety, in particular in June 2023 a training on PCR in view of contingencies.  Field trainings using mobile laboratories in September.

In general, the visit was successful, the parties agreed on further activities and expressed their mutual desire for a long and fruitful cooperation on biosafety issues.
